The History of Alpha Tau 1968-1993 Compiled March 1993 by the Research Committee of Debra Agee, Yvonne Cordell, Mary McKown, Merle Grant, and Karen Gorden, with special thanks to Patsy Meadors for her time and dedication in helping complete the project. Name The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, founded in Austin, Texas, May 1, 1929, is an educational, honorary, professional organization. The name is a combination of the initial letters of three Greek words. The word "Society" designates the overall international organization and/or the total membership. State organizations are named by Greek letters in the order o their founding or the name of the country. Chapters are named by Greek letters in the same manner within their state organization.
History The Delta Kappa Gamma Society was founded on May 11, 1929, at the Faculty Women's Club, Austin, Texas. Originally chartered and incorporated in Texas in 1929, the amended charter permits establishment of charters anywhere in the world. Expansion in new political divisions in under the direction of the International Society.
Founders Twelve Texas women, representing a cross section of educational work, started the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, a member of the University of Texas faculty, interested the other founders, (which are listed elsewhere on this website).
Founding of the State Chapter The Missouri Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society was organized May 27, 1933, at the Tiger Hotel, in Columbia, Missouri, by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton. The name of the State Chapter is Delta.

Founding of Omicron Chapter Omicron Chapter of Delta State was organized August 17, 1946, at Lebanon, Missouri, by Miss Minnie L. Irons, a State Founder, and Miss Dessa Manuel. Omicron Chapter Charter Members were: Miss Anna E. Algeo, Mrs. Mary Emma Allen, Miss Jessie Burley, Miss Arilla Deckard, Miss Mary McKown, Mrs. Hazel Ponder, Miss June Algeo, Miss Grace Burgess, Miss Lena Davidson, Mrs. Elva L. Dunn, Miss Helen L. Miller, Mrs. Olive Robertson, and Miss Anna Stearns.
Founding of Alpha Tau Chapter The Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta State, of Delta Kappa Gamma, was organized on June 1, 1968, at the Bolivar Christian Church in Bolivar, Missouri. Neva M. Ross, State Membership Chairman, recommended that a new chapter be organized. The overly large membership of the Omicron Chapter of Lebanon, and the need to extend the territory of Delta Kappa Gamma into other counties made the recommendation advisable. The 34 members of Omicron Chapter who voluntarily transferred and became Charter Members of Alpha Tau Chapter (are listed elsewhere on this website). Thirteen women, initiated at the organizational meeting, also became Charter Members of the Alpha Tau Chapter. They (are also listed elsewhere on this website). The installing officers were Mrs. Margaret Hale, State President, and Neva M. Ross, State Membership Chairman.

There was a discussion about wearing hats to the meeting. Lula Mitchell made a motion that each do as she wanted to. Motion seconded by Geneva Cansler. Motion carried. --March 21, 1970. President Emojean Jenkins presented a new gavel to the chapter. --April 18, 1970. Alpha Tau planned and decorated the tables for the Birthday Luncheon at the State Meeting held at the Lodge of the Four Seasons. Emojean Jenkins presided at this luncheon. --August 15, 1970. Alpha Tau was hostess to the joint picnic held at Bennett Spring State Park with Omicron Chapter.

She retired after 47 years of teacher and is certified in 10 teaching areas.

November 14, 1992--$281.00 to each fund. Meetings: April 3, 1993--Alpha Tau celebrated its 25th Anniversary at the Community Room at Citizens Memorial Hospital.
